Then Danny Kashou read the following to the SCPS members gathered:
Danny Kashou announces that Jim Little names a JL Farms seedling after Ken | It is with great honor I bring to you the news today that Jim Little of JL Farms is honoring our dear friend, group moderator, mentor, plumeria grower, and teacher for so many years with a Jim Little seedling named "KEN AMES." Jim Little will be sending Ken a cutting of the new flower and registering it with the PSA.
Here are comments from other fans of Ken Ames:
Jim Little:
Danny - This is a new flower developed at JL Farms. At your suggestion I will name a plumeria for "Ken Ames." Ken Ames has always stood out as a very ethical person. I am happy to know him and to name a special plumeria for him.
Bud Guillot:
Thank God for plumerias because it was through plumerias that I met a wonderful friend, Ken Ames, and what an honor to be friend of Kens. Ken has a wealth of knowledge about plumerias and unselfishly shares that knowledge with one and all.
Scott Lawder:
Ken has grown plumerias since 1970. He says only a few have been growing them longer, Bud, JL, Jim Clarke but he thinks he is in the top 10 for longevity.
Ken helping a fellow plumerian at the 2006 San Diego Plumeria Sale |
He has helped thousands of people worldwide online as Pals moderator for a decade. When the internet groups started in earnest in 1999, he was the only person with 30-odd years of experience who took the time to help anyone and everyone with questions day after day year after year. It was so impressive and unusual that we asked him to be a moderator with us on the Plumeria Pals, the largest most active internet group in the world at that time. His patience with new people was extraordinary as was his enthusiasm. He often gave away cuttings to those who wanted to try them and did the yeoman's job of answering the same questions over and over for the new people. He was a co-founder of the SCPS, now the largest group in the world, and one of the early proponents of grafting plumerias, another method that has become extremely popular all over the world. Most importantly, he never failed to take the time to teach and explain his methods and experiences to the least experienced beginner, often helping them again and again.

It goes without saying that he posted some of the most magnificent photos seen on the internet - his collection was one of the best anywhere. Several of his plumerias have become registered cultivars with the PSA and many more are in line for official register.
We are all better because of his expertise and willingness to share with others his passion. He is loved and known the world over and truly there is no one else like him. We are all better for having him in our lives!
